Understanding new heavy-duty emissions and DEF

The 2010 heavy-duty emission standards for North America are: 0.2g/HP-hr NOx and 0.01 g/HP-hr Particulate Matter (PM). This is a reduction of emissions by 98% since the late 1980’s.

2010 Emissions Standards for Heavy Duty Trucks / Refuse Equipment

Cummins will meet the 2010 emissions standards with the addition of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) aftertreatment using Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. SCR technology uses a urea based chemical called diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and a catalytic converter to significantly reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions.

Here's a great pdf that will take you through the process of understanding what is required for vehicles to meet the 2010 emissions standards and also in knowing more about DEF - as DEF will definitely be more of a topic of discussion over the next year!

Gotta love technology that helps provide a greener environment. We need to reduce our carbon footprint and always be researching in this field to come up with new processes and technology.
Vehicle Tracking is another piece of technology that can cut fuel usage.
