Before the heat peaks, do this on every chassis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffe0e1\"><li>Pressure-test the radiator cap and check for weeping at the neck<\/li><li>Inspect all coolant hoses for cracks, soft spots, swelling, or chafing<\/li><li>Pull a coolant sample, check the freeze point AND nitrite\/SCA level<\/li><li>Clean the radiator, charge air cooler, transmission cooler, A\/C condenser back-flush with low-pressure water and a fin comb<\/li><li>Verify the engine fan clutch is engaging properly. A lazy fan in July is a guaranteed roadside event<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#b769ff\"><br>2) Hydraulics: the heart of every refuse body<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-vivid-purple-background-color has-vivid-purple-color is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Florida ambient temps stack on top of already hot hydraulic cycles. Don&#8217;t skip these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f9f2ff\"><li>Pull an oil analysis sample, look for water and dirt contamination, which spike in humid climates<\/li><li>Verify viscosity grade, petroleum-based oils often need a seasonal change for hot weather<\/li><li>Inspect every hose for chafing common failure points: branches, light poles on tight turns, overloaded containers<\/li><li>Check and replace tank breathers a clogged breather pulls humid Florida air straight into your reservoir<\/li><li>Don&#8217;t overfill OR underfill the reservoir both cause heat problems<\/li><li>Tighten the tank cap. Sounds basic, costs fleets thousands every summer<\/li><li>Grease pins and bushings on schedule dry pins under heat load wear out fast<\/li><li>Be careful pressure washing, water forced past ram seals contaminates your whole system<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\"><table class=\"has-subtle-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><tbody><tr><td>~250 hrs <br>Engine oil           <\/td><td>~500 hrs<br>Automatic transmission<\/td><td>~600 hrs<br>Rear differentials<\/td><td>~1,000 hrs<br>Antifreeze &amp; hydraulic oil<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#008152\">3) Body-specific summer tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"background-color:#007f50;color:#007f50\" \/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-subtle-pale-green-background-color has-background\"><tbody><tr><td>\ud83d\udd29 Roll-offs<br>Watch hoist cylinder seals  a small drip in May becomes a stranded truck in August. Inspect cables and sheaves weekly. Keep sub-frame pivot points well greased.<\/td><td>\u2699\ufe0f Front loaders<br>Check arm cylinders and packer cycle for sluggish operation a sign of heat-thinned oil or a tired pump. UV destroys tarp systems; inspect them now.<\/td><td>\ud83e\uddbe Side loaders<br>Focus on grabber hoses, rotation actuator, and limit switches. Verify cooling fans on electronics enclosures sensors don&#8217;t love 140\u00b0F cab roofs.<\/td><td>\ud83d\ude9b Rear loaders<br>Inspect packer cylinder rods for pitting. Check the tailgate seal and prop nobody should be under a tailgate held up by hydraulics alone, ever.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#d15700\">4) Refuse Truck Summer Maintenance: The Rest of the Truck<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"background-color:#c65300;color:#c65300\" \/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffe3cf\"><li><strong>Tires:<\/strong>&nbsp;Hot pavement plus heavy loads equals blowouts. Check pressures cold, every morning.<\/li><li><strong>Belts and rubber:<\/strong>&nbsp;Replace anything questionable now, not in August.<\/li><li><strong>Brakes:<\/strong>&nbsp;Inspect pads, drums, slack adjusters, and S-cams. Stop-and-go refuse work plus heat fades brakes fast.<\/li><li><strong>Batteries:<\/strong>&nbsp;Heat kills batteries even faster than cold. Load-test every battery at the start of summer.<\/li><li><strong>A\/C system:<\/strong>&nbsp;This is a safety item now. Charge it, replace cabin air filters, confirm vent temps are pulling 40\u00b0F or below.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\">5) Don&#8217;t forget the driver they&#8217;re part of the fleet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">Heat illness is real, it&#8217;s preventable, and it&#8217;s on us as owners to protect against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\"><table class=\"has-subtle-pale-blue-background-color has-background\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Train every June<\/strong>&nbsp;on heat rash, cramps, exhaustion, and stroke symptoms.<\/td><td><strong>Acclimatize new hires<\/strong> ~20% exposure day one, +20% each day per OSHA\/NIOSH guidance.<\/td><td><strong>Hydration:<\/strong>&nbsp;40 oz insulated bottle, electrolytes in the yard fridge, ~1 cup every 20 minutes.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Rest breaks:<\/strong>&nbsp;15 min every 2 hours once temps hit the threshold good practice regardless of law.<\/td><td><strong>Start earlier<\/strong>&nbsp;so the hottest hours aren&#8217;t spent on the heaviest stops.<\/td><td><strong>Stock the cabs:<\/strong>&nbsp;cooling towels, electrolyte packets, sunscreen, cold packs.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Dispatch check-ins<\/strong>&nbsp;on extreme-heat days a quick call can catch exhaustion before it becomes stroke.<\/td><td><strong>Heat stroke = 911.<\/strong>&nbsp;Confusion, hot dry skin, no sweating, rapid pulse. Get them cool immediately.<\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Florida summers will find every weak spot on your truck and every shortcut in your safety program.
